I thought I would share the "Story For All Ages" from this past Sunday, along with the song that we played.
Christopher Duffley’s mother was addicted to drugs. As a result he was born very early, weighing less than two-pounds. His weight was a full pound less than Cardie when she was born and if you’ve ever seen pictures, it is hard to imagine a child any smaller.
The mix of prematurity and drugs left Christopher blind and with significant delays in most every other aspect of his life.
Despite all of that, Christopher began singing at the age of four and before his 10th birthday was performing in front of large crowds, singing songs like, “Open the Eyes of My Heart.”
In the midst of all the terrible that was swirling around this week, I stumbled upon Chris’s song on YouTube. I had never heard of him. I listened as that seven- or eight-year-old boy sang:
Open the eyes of my heart Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
I want to see you
To see you higher Lifted Up
Shining in the Light of your Glory
Pour Out Your Power And Love
As We Sing Holy, Holy, Holy
Open the eyes of my heart Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
I want to see you
There was something very special about a blind boy singing those words, words about seeing God. We are so often blind, blind to what it is that God envisions for us. It is said that over 65 million people have collectively viewed the video of Christopher singing that song. If just a fraction of that many would open the eyes of their hearts, just maybe this world would have a fighting chance of being even a shadow of the Kingdom of God.
