Trunk or Treat is another event where I do very little but reap wonderful benefits.

Nurture Commission along with the help of all who donated candy and money, put the whole thing together, such as choosing the theme, setting up, ensuring we have enough candy to hand out and this year it also included blowing up inflatable animals.   There’s probably much more that I don’t even think about, but all I have to do is ride out to the town park with my robe, fake hair and fake beard.

While we do it to connect with the community at large, I take away more each year from the reactions of the folks who filter past our trunk.  I am always heartened by the number of kids (and parents) who look at the display and know what it is.  Perhaps last year was more impressive, knowing Jonah over Noah this year, but it is still something that makes me feel hopeful.  We can get a sense that we live in a more Godless world than ever, but in our community at least, I’m not so sure that’s the case.  It truly does warm your heart to see a kid come by and say, “hey, that’s Noah’s ark!”  Another comment from a parent last night to their child, was, “we were just talking about the story of Noah and his ark the other day, remember?”

God is still alive and well and he is not just present in every home, he is actively sought in many.

I also want to give a shout out to our next-door neighbor at last night’s event, Liberty Brethren Church in Quicksburg.  I loved their theme of “Fall in love with Jesus,” complete with all sorts of autumn decorations in and around their trunk.

I’m not sure what the theme will be next year, but I’m sure my robe, hair and beard will be ready.

Blog comments will be sent to the moderator
